NRCS Announces Signup for Wildlife Habitat Program

Madison, Wis…… The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced that the Wisconsin signup for the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program will be Wednesday, Jan. 23, through Feb. 6, 2008, at USDA Service Centers throughout the state. The program helps landowners to restore a variety of wildlife habitats that are in decline.

“This wildlife program is very popular with Wisconsin landowners,” said Pat Leavenworth, NRCS State Conservationist for Wisconsin. “In fact, we have a backlog of projects on a waiting list that we are anxious to begin with this 2008 funding.”

The Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) is a voluntary program for people who want to develop or improve wildlife habitat on private lands. NRCS offers technical and financial assistance to help establish and improve wildlife habitat. Almost any type of land may be eligible.
Landowners interested in applying should contact the NRCS office at the USDA Service Center for the county in which the land is located. All eligible applications received by the end of the ranking period will be evaluated and ranked for 2008 funds.  For more information on the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, see www.wi.nrcs.usda.gov  under Programs, or contact the NRCS office at the USDA Service Center serving your county.
