2008 Southwest Wisconsin Land Judging Competition

The 2008 Southwest Wisconsin Land Judging Contest, which is cosponsored by the Land Conservation offices of Grant, Green, and Lafayette County was held Friday, September 26 at land owned by Sugar River Crossing, just east of Attica. Those participating were the York 4-H club, as well as FFA chapters from: Albany, Belleville, Belmont, Black Hawk, Campbellsport, Janesville Craig, Lancaster, Milton, Monroe, Monticello, Mt. Horeb, Potosi, and Shullsburg. A total of 178 students participated in the contest.

The results are as follows: Top Individual was Tom Jenson of Monroe, second went to Patrick Johnson of Milton, third was Brett Hefty of Monticello, fourth was Luke Peterson of Monroe, and fifth went to Tyler Ritschard of Monticello. Monroe received top team, followed by Monticello, Milton, Lancaster, and Belleville.

Each student described soil and landscape features, rated the land capability class, noted major limitations for land use, and made recommendations for conservation practices. Students were scored based on agreement between their evaluations and those of official contest judges. Judges included local Land Conservation and Natural Resources Conservation Service professionals.
